After Motzei Shabbat (מוצאי שבת-the going out of the Sabbath), as it brightened to the first day of the week, Miryam HaMagdalit came with the other Miryam to see the tomb. Suddenly there was a great quake, because the angel of God descended from heaven, approached, and rolled the stone from the entrance, and sat upon it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing was as white as snow. The guards were terrified from fear of him and became like the dead. The angel spoke up and said to the women,”Do not fear. See, I know that you are seeking Yeshua who was crucified. He is not here because he has risen as he said. Come and see the place where Ha-Adon was lying. Go quickly and tell His talmidim that He has risen from the dead and he is going ahead of you to the Galil and there you will see him. Look, I have told you.” The women quickly went out from the tomb in fear and great joy, and they ran to report to his talmidim. As they were going to report to his talmidim, Yeshua happened upon them, and he said, “Shalom to you.” They approached, grasped his feet, and bowed down to him. Yeshua said to them, “Do not fear. Go and tell my brothers to go on to the Galil, and there they will see me.” As they were going men from the guard came into the city and told the chief priests all that had happened. They assembled with the elders and counseled, and then gave a large amount of money to the soldiers, saying, “Please say, ‘His talmidim came during the night and stole him while we were sleeping.’ And if this matter is heard in the home of the governor, we will appease him. But as for you, do not fear.” They took the money and did as they were told (literally as it was ‘placed in their mouth’), and this rumor has gone out among the Yehudim to this day.

When the Shabbat day had passed, Miryam HaMagdalit, Miryam the mother of Ya’akov, and Shlomit bought spices with which to go and apply oil to him. On the first (day) of the week , early in the morning, they came to the tomb as the sun rose. They said to one another, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb for us?” But when they looked intently, they saw that the stone had been rolled away, for it was very large. They came inside the tomb and saw a certain young man (a malakh, angel, appeared in the likeness of a young man-בחור אחד) sitting to the right, clothed in a white robe, and they were astonished (נדהמו-shocked). He said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You are seeking Yeshua the Notzri (of Nazareth), who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. Look—this is the place where they laid him! But as for you, go and tell his talmidim and Keifa that He is going ahead of you to the Galil (the region of Galilee), and there you will see him, as he said to you.” Immediately they went out (fleeing) from the tomb because trembling and bewilderment had seized them and they did not tell anything to anyone because they were afraid. [However, in the same morning] when he (the Living One) rose from the dead, on the first day of the week [yom rishon; HaBikkurim] He at the first did appear to Miryam HaMagdalit, for whom He had driven seven demons. She went and told this to the men who had been with him, who were mourning and weeping. When they heard that he lives and had appeared to her, they did not believe her.

On the first day of the week, before dawn, they came to the tomb and brought the spices that they had prepared. There were other women with them. They saw that the stone had been rolled from the tomb. They went inside it, but they did not find the body of HaAdon Yeshua. They were confused about this matter, but then two men (שְׁנֵי אֲנָשִׁים-two malakhim bearing the likeness of men) were standing over them, and their garments were brilliant! Terror fell on them, and they bowed down with their faces to the ground. They said to them, “Why do you seek the living one (הַחַי-hechai) among the dead? He is not here; for he has risen. Remember what he had spoken to you while he was still in the Galil (region of Galilee), saying, ‘For ben ha’adam must be handed over to sinful men and be crucified, but on the third day he shall surely rise.'” They remembered his words. So they returned from the tomb and told all these things to the Eleven and all the rest. Here are the ones who told the shlichim (the Eleven chosen emissaries) these things: Miryam HaMagdalit Yochanah, Miryam the mother of Ya’akov, and the others. But the words (of the women) were nonsense in the eyes of them and they (the men) did not believe. Keifa arose and ran to the tomb and peered in, but he did not see anything but the burial garments resting there, so he returned to his place, astonished about what had happened.

On the first day of the week as it turned toward morning, while it was still dark, Miryam HaMagdalit came to the tomb and saw the stone was removed from the tomb. She ran and came to Shim’on Keifa and to the other talmid whom Yeshua loved and said to them, “They have taken HaAdon Yeshua from his tomb, and we do not know where they have put him!” Keifa left along with the other talmid and they went to the tomb. Both of them ran together, but the other talmid ran faster, passed Keifa, and came to the tomb first. He peered inside and saw the burial garments lying there but he did not enter. Shim’on Keifa came after him. He entered the tomb and saw the burial garments lying there. The head-scarf was not lying beside the burial garments; instead, it was folded up by itself in a separate place. The other talmid who entered the tomb first also entered. He saw and believed. For they yet did not understand what was written (הכתוב-the Scripture), that He would surely rise from among the dead. The talmidim returned and went home. And Miryam stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept she bent down into the tomb and saw two malakim wearing white sitting in the resting place where they had previously put the body of Yeshua, one at the head and one at the feet. They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “Because they have taken Adoni away from here and I do not know where they put him.” When she finished saying this, she turned around behind her and saw Yeshua standing there, but she did not know that it was Yeshua. Yeshua asked her, “Woman why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” She thought him to be the gardener, so she said to him, “Sir, if you have moved him from here, please tell me where you have put him and I will take him from there.” Yeshua said to her, “Miryam,” and she turned and said to him, “Rabbi!” Yeshua said to her, “Do not touch me, for I have still not ascended to Avi (my Father) but go to my brothers (אַחַי-achai, brethren as a group) and tell them, ‘I go to my Father and your Father, to *my God and your God. Miryam HaMagdalit came and told the talmidim about whom she had seen and what he had spoken to her.

“My God and your God”
The Foundation of our Faith:
The resurrection of the Messiah Yeshua is the foundational event of Messianic Jewish faith. The Messiah Yeshua was crucified on the accursed tree during Passover and rose physically from the dead on Yom HaBikkurim on the third day. This event is viewed as the ultimate validation of hid identity, teachings, and atoning work.
Prophetic Foundations in the Tanakh:
While modern readers often focus on the Brit HaChadashah Jewish scholars point out that the resurrection of the Messiah was anticipated “according to the Scriptures” in the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh):
The Third Day: Hosea 6:2 indicates a reviving and raising up on the third day.
The Promise of Incorruption: In Psalm 16:10 King David writes, “For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol; Nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay.” Peter and Paul both used this verse to argue that David was predicting the Messiah’s victory over the grave.
The Rejuvenated Servant: Isaiah 53 details a “Suffering Servant” who is cut off from the land of the living and buried. Yet, verse 10 declares that afterward, “He shall see His offspring, He shall prolong His days,” implying a return to life after a vicarious death.
The Davidic Throne: Scholars note that the covenant promises made to David of an everlasting throne would fail if the Messiah remained dead, making a resurrection necessary to fulfill God’s eternal decree.
Fulfillment of the Festivals of Israel:
In Messianic theology, Yeshua’s death and resurrection perfectly align with the Spring Feasts of Adonai outlined in Leviticus:
Passover (Pesach): Yeshua was sacrificed as the ultimate Passover Lamb to pay the ransom price for sin.
Feast of Firstfruits (Yom HaBikkurim): He rose on the day after the Sabbath during Passover week. By doing so, He became the “firstfruits” of the future, global resurrection of the dead.
Key Historical Evidences:
The Brit HaChadasha and early historical accounts present several arguments supporting the physical resurrection:
The Empty Tomb: Despite a secured Roman guard and a massive sealed stone, the tomb was found completely empty on the first day of the week.
Post-Resurrection Appearances: Yeshua did not just appear to a single person; He appeared to Mary Magdalene, the Apostles, and eventually to more than 500 witnesses at one time.
Transformation of the Talmidim: Following the crucifixion, the disciples were terrified and scattered. Shortly after, they suddenly transformed into bold witnesses, willingly facing severe persecution and martyrdom because they were certain they had seen the risen Messiah.
Spiritual Significance:
The resurrection is not viewed simply as a spectacular miracle, but as a shift in the universal order:
Vindication: It serves as God’s official “seal of approval,” proving that Yeshua’s sacrifice for sin was fully accepted.
Victory Over Death: It demonstrates that the power of sin and death has been broken.
A New Creation: It marks the beginning of the Messianic Era, offering believers the promise of their own future bodily resurrection and eternal life
Jewish Context and Expectations:
During the Second Temple period, Jewish thought regarding the resurrection was evolving. While the Tzaddikim (Sadducees) or Tzadokim (צְדוּקִים) rejected the concept, the Prushim (פְּרוּשִׁים) strongly advocated for a general resurrection of the dead at the end of time.
Catastrophic Messianism: Discoveries like the Dead Sea Scrolls and historical records show that some first-century Jewish factions entertained a “theology of catastrophic messianism,” where a leader’s suffering or temporary death was tied to redemption, followed by a vindication.
Traditional Judaism: In mainstream traditional Judaism, the T’chiyat HaMeitim (resurrection of the dead) remains a core belief. It is anticipated as a collective event occurring during the future Messianic Age.
Divine Vindication: The resurrection served as God the Father’s literal “seal of approval” on Yeshua’s life, teachings, and his sacrifice on the accursed tree. It proved his victory over sin and universal evil.
The Firstfruits: As Shaul Benyamin (Paul) explains Messiah’s resurrection acts as the “firstfruits” or a prototype. It guarantees that all who trust in him will also experience a physical resurrection into eternal life.
