The Forty-ninth Miracle of Messiah:
Yochanan 21:1-14
וַיְהִי אַחֲרֵי־כֵן וַיֹּסֶף יֵשׁוּעַ לְהֵרָאוֹת אֶל־תַּלְמִידָיו עַל־יָם טִיבַרְיָה וְזֶה־דְּבַר הֵרָאוֹתוֹ אֲלֵיהֶם׃ שִׁמְעוֹן פֶּטְרוֹס וְתוֹמָא הַנִּקְרָא דִידוּמוֹס וּנְתַנְאֵל מִקָּנָה אֲשֶׁר בְּאֶרֶץ הַגָּלִיל וּבְנֵי זַבְדַּי וְעוֹד שְׁנַיִם אֲחֵרִים מִתַּלְמִידָיו יָשְׁבוּ יַחְדָּו׃ וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם שִׁמְעוֹן פֶּטְרוֹס הִנְנִי הֹלֵךְ לָדוּג וַיֹּאמְרוּ אֵלָיו גַּם־אֲנַחְנוּ נֵלֵךְ עִמָּךְ וַיֵּצְאוּ וַיֵּרְדוּ בָאֳנִיָּה וְלֹא לָכְדוּ מְאוּמָה בַּלַּיְלָה הַהוּא׃ הַבֹּקֶר אוֹר וְיֵשׁוּעַ עָמַד עַל־שְׂפַת הַיָּם וְהַתַּלְמִידִים לֹא יָדְעוּ כִּי יֵשׁוּעַ הוּא׃ וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם יֵשׁוּעַ בָּנַי הֲיֵשׁ־לָכֶם דָּבָר לֶאֱכֹל וַיֹּאמְרוּ לֹא׃ וַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶם הַשְׁלִיכוּ הַמִּכְמֹרֶת מִימִין לָאֳנִיָּה וְתִמְצָאוּ וַיַּשְׁלִיכוּ וְלֹא־יָכְלוּ עוֹד לִמְשֹׁךְ אֹתָהּ מֵרֹב הַדָּגִים׃ וַיֹּאמֶר הַתַּלְמִיד הַהוּא אֲשֶׁר יֵשׁוּעַ אֲהֵבוֹ אֶל־פֶּטְרוֹס הִנֵּה־הָאָדוֹן וַיְהִי כִּשְׁמֹעַ שִׁמְעוֹן פֶּטְרוֹס כִּי הוּא הָאָדוֹן וַיַּחְגֹּר אֶת־מְעִילוֹ כִּי עֵירוֹם הָיָה וַיִּתְנַפֵּל אֶל־הַיָּם׃ וְהַתַּלְמִידִים הַנִּשְׁאָרִים בָּאוּ בַסְּפִינָה כִּי לֹא הִרְחִיקוּ מִן־הַיַּבָּשָׁה כִּי אִם־כְּמָאתַיִם אַמָּה וַיִּמְשְׁכוּ אֶת־הַמִּכְמֹרֶת עִם־הַדָּגִים׃ וַיְהִי בַּעֲלוֹתָם אֶל־הַיַּבָּשָׁה וַיִּרְאוּ וְהִנֵּה גַּחֲלֵי־אֵשׁ עֲרוּכִים וְדָגִים עֲלֵיהֶם וְלֶחֶם לֶאֱכֹל׃ וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם יֵשׁוּעַ הָבִיאוּ מִן־הַדָּגִים אֲשֶׁר לְכַדְתֶּם עָתָּה׃ וַיַּעַל שִׁמְעוֹן פֶּטְרוֹס וַיִּמְשֹׁךְ אֶת־הַמִּכְמֹרֶת אֶל־הַיַּבָּשָׁה וְהִיא מְלֵאָה דָּגִים גְּדוֹלִים מֵאָה וַחֲמִשִּׁים וּשְׁלשָׁה וְלֹא נִקְרְעָה הַמִּכְמֹרֶת אַף־כִּי רַבִּים הָיוּ׃ וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם יֵשׁוּעַ בֹּאוּ בְרוּ־לָחֶם וְאֵין אִישׁ מִן־הַתַּלְמִידִים אֲשֶׁר מְלָאוֹ לִבּוֹ לִשְׁאֹל מִי אָתָּה כִּי יָדְעוּ אֲשֶׁר הוּא הָאָדוֹן׃ וַיָּבֹא יֵשׁוּעַ וַיִקַּח אֶת־הַלֶּחֶם וַיִּתֵּן לָהֶם וְאֶת־הַדָּגִים׃ וְזֹאת הַפַּעַם הַשְּׁלִישִׁית אֲשֶׁר־נִרְאָה יֵשׁוּעַ אֶל־תַּלְמִידָיו אַחֲרֵי קוּמוֹ מֵעִם הַמֵּתִים׃
אַחֲרֵי כֵן הוֹסִיף יֵשׁוּעַ לְהֵרָאוֹת אֶל תַּלְמִידָיו לְיַד יָם טְבֶרְיָה. הוּא הוֹפִיעַ בְּדֶרֶךְ זֹאת:שִׁמְעוֹן כֵּיפָא וְתֹאמָא הַנִּקְרָא דִּידִימוֹס הָיוּ יַחַד עִם נְתַנְאֵל מִקָּנָה שֶׁבַּגָּלִיל וְעִם בְּנֵי זַבְדַּי וּשְׁנַיִם אֲחֵרִים מִתַּלְמִידָיו. אָמַר לָהֶם שִׁמְעוֹן כֵּיפָא: “אֲנִי הוֹלֵךְ לָדוּג.” אָמְרוּ לוֹ: “גַּם אֲנַחְנוּ בָּאִים אִתְּךָ.” הָלְכוּ וְנִכְנְסוּ לַסִּירָה וְלֹא לָכְדוּ מְאוּמָה בְּאוֹתוֹ לַיְלָה. עִם בֹּקֶר עָמַד יֵשׁוּעַ עַל הַחוֹף, אַךְ הַתַּלְמִידִים לֹא הִכִּירוּ שֶׁזֶּה יֵשׁוּעַ. אָמַר לָהֶם יֵשׁוּעַ: “בָּנַי, אֵין לָכֶם דָּגִים?” הֵשִׁיבוּ לוֹ: “אֵין.” אָמַר לָהֶם: “הַשְׁלִיכוּ אֶת הָרֶשֶׁת בְּצִדָּהּ הַיְמָנִי שֶׁל הַסִּירָה וְתִמְצְאוּ.” הֵם הִשְׁלִיכוּ וְלֹא יָכְלוּ עוֹד לִמְשֹׁךְ אוֹתָהּ מֵרֹב דָּגִים. הֵגִיב הַתַּלְמִיד הָאָהוּב עַל יֵשׁוּעַ וְאָמַר לְכֵיפָא: “זֶה הָאָדוֹן!” כַּאֲשֶׁר שָׁמַע שִׁמְעוֹן כֵּיפָא שֶׁזֶּה הָאָדוֹן, לָבַשׁ אֶת בִּגְדוֹ הַחִיצוֹן, כִּי גֵּווֹ הָיָה חָשׂוּף, וְהֵטִיל עַצְמוֹ לַיָּם. אַךְ יֶתֶר הַתַּלְמִידִים בָּאוּ בַּסִּירָה הַקְּטַנָּה כְּשֶׁהֵם גּוֹרְרִים אֶת הָרֶשֶׁת עִם הַדָּגִים, כִּי לֹא הָיוּ רְחוֹקִים מִן הַחוֹף אֶלָּא כְּמֵאָה מֶטֶר. כַּאֲשֶׁר עָלוּ לַחוֹף רָאוּ גֶּחָלִים עֲרוּכוֹת וְדָגִים מֻנָּחִים עֲלֵיהֶן, וְלֶחֶם. אָמַר לָהֶם יֵשׁוּעַ: “הָבִיאוּ מִן הַדָּגִים אֲשֶׁר לְכַדְתֶּם כָּעֵת.” עָלָה שִׁמְעוֹן כֵּיפָא וּמָשַׁךְ אֶת הָרֶשֶׁת אֶל הַחוֹף וְהִיא מְלֵאָה דָּגִים גְּדוֹלִים, מֵאָה וַחֲמִשִּׁים וּשְׁלוֹשָׁה, וְאַף שֶׁהָיוּ רַבִּים כָּל כָּךְ לֹא נִקְרְעָה הָרֶשֶׁת. אָמַר לָהֶם יֵשׁוּעַ: “בּוֹאוּ, אִכְלוּ!” אַף אֶחָד מֵהַתַּלְמִידִים לֹא הֵעֵז לִשְׁאֹל אוֹתוֹ “מִי אַתָּה?”, כִּי יָדְעוּ שֶׁהוּא הָאָדוֹן. נִגַּשׁ יֵשׁוּעַ, לָקַח אֶת הַלֶּחֶם וְנָתַן לָהֶם וְכֵן גַּם אֶת הַדָּגִים. זֹאת הָיְתָה הַפַּעַם הַשְּׁלִישִׁית שֶׁיֵּשׁוּעַ הִתְגַּלָּה לַתַּלְמִידִים אַחֲרֵי קוּמוֹ מִן הַמֵּתִים. פ
Afterward, Yeshua (the resurrected Messiah) appeared once more to his talmidim by the Sea of Tivaryah (Sea of Tiberias), and this is the account of his appearance to them: Shim’on Keifa, Toma who is called Didimos (“Twin”), Netan’el from Kanah which is in the land of Galil, the sons of Zevedi (זבדי-Zebedee), and two of his other talmidim were sitting together. Shim’on Keifa said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We are with you.” So they went out and got down into the boat, but they did not catch anything that night. At morning light Yeshua was standing on the seashore, but his talmidim did not know that he was Yeshua. Yeshua said to them, “My sons, do you have anything?” (literally something to eat with bread; i.e. fish) They said, “No.” He said to them, “Cast your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some!” They cast it, and they were no longer able to draw it in due to the abundance of fish. That talmid whom Yeshua loved said to Keifa, “Look– it is-haAdon!” (“!זה האדון”-It is the Master!) When Shim’on Keifa heard that it was haAdon he wrapped his outer garment (בגדו החיצון) around his waist because he was naked and threw himself into the sea. The rest of the talmidim came in the boat since they were not far from the beach—only about two hundred ammot (about a hundred meters)—and they drew in the net with the fish. When they came up to the land, they saw there were burning coals arranged with fish on them and bread to eat. Yeshua said to them, “Now bring the fish that you just caught.” Shim’on Keifa came up and drew the net onto the land. It was full of large fish—one hundred and fifty-three (100, 50, 3)—and yet the net was not torn even though there were so many. Yeshua said to them, “Come, eat!” (fish with bread). Not one of his talmidim dare ask him, “Who are you?” For they knew he was the Master (adoneinu HaMashiach; 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8). This was the third time that Yeshua appeared to his talmidim after he rose from the dead.
The last miraculous catch of fish:
The Location: Sea of Galilee (also called the Sea of Tiberias).
The Empty Night: Simon Peter, Thomas, Nathanael, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples go fishing on the Sea of Galilee (Tiberias). They catch absolutely nothing all night long.
The Command: Early the next morning, a man stands on the shore whom they do not recognize. He calls out and tells them to cast their net on the right side of the boat.
The Miracle: When they obey, the net instantly fills with so many fish (153 fish) that they couldn’t even bring the net into the boat, yet it did not break.
The Recognition: Seeing the sudden massive catch prompted the disciple Yochanan to recognize Yeshua and say, “It is the Master!”
The Response:
Keifa, excited to see Yeshua, put on his outer garment and swam roughly 100 yards to shore, while the others dragged the heavy net in behind their boat.
The Aftermath: The remaining talmidim tow the heavy net to the beach. There, they find Yeshua waiting with a charcoal fire, having prepared a morning breakfast of bread, and fish.
Bookends to Ministry:
This event mirrors a near-identical miracle found at the start of Yeshua’s ministry in Lukas 5:1-11 where he first called Keifa to be a “fisher of men.” Repeating it reminds the discouraged disciples of their original calling.
