The Fifth Sign and Twenty-fourth & Twenty-fifth Miracles of Messiah:

מיד האיץ בתלמידיו להכנס לסירה ולהקדים אותו בנסיעה אל עבר הים עד שהוא ישלח את המון העם. הוא שלח את העם ועלה להר לבדו כדי להתפלל. לעת ערב היה שם לבדו. בינתים הגיעה הסירה למרחק כמה מילין מן החוף כשהיא מטלטלת על הגלים והרוח נושבת נגדה. והנה באשמרת הלילה הרביעית בא אליהם ישוע והוא מהלך על פני הים. כשראוהו התלמידים מהלך על פני הים נבהלו. אמרו: רוח רפאים היא, והחלו לצעק מפחד. מיד דבר אליהם ישוע ואמר: חזקו, אני הוא. אל תפחדו. השיב כיפא ואמר אליו: אדוני, אם אתה הוא, צוני לבוא אליך על פני המים. אמר ישוע: בוא! כיפא ירד מן הסירה והלך על פני המים לקראת ישוע. אולם כשראה את הרוח הסוערת פחד והחל לשקע. הוא צעק: אדוני, הצל אותי! מיד הושיט ישוע את ידו, החזיק בו ואמר לו: קטן אמונה, מדוע עלה ספק בלבך? בעלותם לסירה פסקה הרוח, והאנשים שהיו בסירה השתחוו לו באמרם: באמת בן-האלוהים אתה. פ

Then Yeshua urged his talmadim to go down into the boat to cross ahead of (precede) him to the other side of the sea, until he had sent away the people. He sent his people away and went up the mountain alone to pray. It was evening, and he was there alone. Now the boat had come halfway across the sea [a few miles from shore], and the waves were tearing it apart, for there was a wind against it. During the fourth watch, Yeshua came to them, walking on the surface of the water. His talmidim saw him walking on the surface of the sea and were terrified. They said, “It is the appearance of a spirit!” and they cried out in fright. Yeshua immediately called to them, “Be strong, for it is I. Do not fear!” Keifa [Petros] answered and said to him, “If it is you, Master, please command and I will come to you on the water.” He said, “Come!” and Keifa went down from the boat and walked on the surface of the water to come to Yeshua. When he saw that the wind was strong, he became afraid and began to sink, and he cried out and said, “Master save me!” Yeshua immediately reached out his hand, took hold of him, and said to him, “Small one in faith, why is your heart divided?” They went up into the boat, and the wind stopped. Then the men in the boat approached and bowed down to him and said, “Surely you are *ben Ha-Elohim!”

*These Yehudim (Jews) who were trained to be shlichim (emissaries) of Rabbeinu Yeshua worshiped the Spirit of God who indwells the Messiah. They did not worship Yeshua the man. For as Jews they knew that Yeshua (Jesus) was a man. He was not God. Nevertheless, the Messiah Yeshua is a very special man. He is a man – adam, anthropos, human – of a different kind. In all his life he never sinned. Not even once. Also, like father Adam who was without sin for a time while he lived in Gan Eden, the Messiah is ben Ha-Elohim—a son of God. However, unlike the first Adam and ourselves the Messiah (the last Adam) has never sinned. For this reason the Messiah ben haElohim ben ha’Adam has always been indwelt with a full measure of the Spirit of God. Therefore to be in the physical presence of the Messiah the man is to be, at the same time, in the very Presence of the Indwelling Spirit of the Holy One—the Living God. Markos 6:45-52

מיד אחרי כן האיץ בתלמידיו להכנס לסירה ולהפליג אל הצד השני, לבית צידא, בעוד שהוא ישלח את ההמון. אחרי שנפרד מהם עלה להר להתפלל. לעת ערב היתה הסירה באמצע הים והוא לבדו על היבשה. ראה אותם מתיגעים בחתירה, כי הרוח נשבה נגדם, ובא אליהם בערך באשמרת הרביעית של הלילה כשהוא הולך על פני הים וכונתו לעבר לידם. כשראוהו הולך על פני הים חשבו שהוא רוח רפאים והחלו לצעק, כי כלם ראו אותו ונבהלו, אך הוא דבר אתם מיד ואמר להם: חזקו, זה אני. אל תפחדו! הוא בא אליהם לתוך הסירה והרוח פסקה. הם השתוממו עד מאד, כי לא למדו דבר מענין ככרות הלחם בגלל קהות לבבם. פ

Immediately afterward, he urged his [Twelve] talmidim to get into the boat and sail to the other side, to Beit-Tzaidah, while he sent the crowd away. After parting from them, he went up the mountain to pray. By evening, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and he was alone on land. He saw them struggling to row, for the wind was against them, and he came to them around the fourth watch of the night, walking on the water, intending to pass by them. When they saw him walking on the water, they thought he was a spirit (ghost) and began to cry out, for they all saw him and were terrified; but he spoke to them immediately, saying, “Take courage! It is I. Do not be afraid!” He stepped into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. They were utterly astonished, for they had learned nothing from the [previous] incident of the loaves due to the hardness of their hearts.

Yochanan 6:15-21

כְּשֶׁהִבְחִין יֵשׁוּעַ שֶׁהֵם עוֹמְדִים לָבוֹא וְלִתְפֹּס אוֹתוֹ כְּדֵי לְהַמְלִיכוֹ, יָצָא שׁוּב אֶל הָהָר הוּא לְבַדּוֹ. לְעֵת עֶרֶב יָרְדוּ תַּלְמִידָיו אֶל הַיָּם וְנִכְנְסוּ לְסִירָה כְּדֵי לַעֲבֹר אֶת הַיָּם אֶל כְּפַר נַחוּם. הַחֹשֶׁךְ כְּבָר יָרַד וְיֵשׁוּעַ עוֹד לֹא בָּא אֲלֵיהֶם. אוֹתָהּ שָׁעָה נָשְׁבָה רוּחַ חֲזָקָה וְהַיָּם הֵחֵל לִסְעֹר. לְאַחַר שֶׁחָתְרוּ כַּחֲמִשָּׁה קִילוֹמֶטְרִים, רָאוּ אֶת יֵשׁוּעַ הוֹלֵךְ עַל הַיָּם וּמִתְקָרֵב אֶל הַסִּירָה. פַּחַד נָפַל עֲלֵיהֶם, אַךְ הוּא אָמַר לָהֶם: אֲנִי הוּא, אַל תִּפְחֲדוּ. אָז חָפְצוּ לְקַבֵּל אוֹתוֹ לַסִּירָה וּלְפֶתַע הָיְתָה הַסִּירָה בַּחוֹף אֲשֶׁר הִפְלִיגוּ אֵלָיו. פ

כשהבחין ישוע שהם עומדים לבוא ולתפס אותו כדי להמליכו, יצא שוב אל ההר הוא לבדו. לעת ערב ירדו תלמידיו אל הים ונכנסו לסירה כדי לעבר את הים אל כפר נחום. החשך כבר ירד וישוע עוד לא בא אליהם. אותה שעה נשבה רוח חזקה והים החל לסער. לאחר שחתרו כחמשה קילומטרים, ראו את ישוע הולך על הים ומתקרב אל הסירה. פחד נפל עליהם, אך הוא אמר להם: אני הוא, אל תפחדו. אז חפצו לקבל אותו לסירה ולפתע היתה הסירה בחוף אשר הפליגו אליו. פ

When Yeshua realized they were about to come and seize him to make him king [Melekh Israel], he withdrew again to the mountain by himself. At evening, his talmidim went down to the sea and got into a boat to cross over to Kefar Nachum. Darkness had already fallen, and Yeshua had not yet come to them. A strong wind began to blow, and the sea grew rough. After rowing about twenty-five or thirty ris they saw Yeshua walking on the water, approaching the boat. They were terrified, but he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” Then they wanted to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the *shore toward which they had been sailing.

*25-30 ris (plural risim) is about five kilometers or 3-4 miles. The Hebrew term ris (ריס) is the Talmudic adaptation of the Greek and Roman measurement of a stadium (plural stadia). The northern part of the sea is roughly 5-7 miles wide, tapering narrower towards the upper inlet of the Jordan river compared to its maximum width of 8 miles (13 kilometers) further south.

Fifth Sign of the Seven Signs of Messiah:

A Hebrew sign (אוֹת-ot) is a unique kind of miracle (נֵס) and wonder (פֶּלֶא). It is a coded communication, a special message. There are seven special coded messages that are embedded in the 50 recorded miracles of the Messiah. These recorded 7 signs and 50 miracles are only a small sample of the innumerable number of signs, wonders, and miracles that the Messiah performed. As it is written (Yochanan 21:25):

.יש עוד מעשים רבים אחרים שעשה ישוע, ואלו נכתבו במפרט חושבני שהעולם עצמו לא היה יכול להכיל את הספרים הנכתבים

“There are many other deeds that Yeshua did, and had these been written in detail I think that the world itself could not have contained the books.”

Today’s Fifth Sign is unique because it is one sign composed of two miracles.

Today’s two miracles witness to God’s rule over nature, time and space. The 24th miracle of Yeshua and Keifa walking on the water and the calming of the storm attests to God’s rule through His Messiah over nature. The 25th miracle of the boat with Yeshua and his 12 tannaim in it instantly being transported over miles of sea to shore, testifies to God’s rule through His *Son over time and space.

*Ben Ha-Elohim

The Seven Signs of Messiah:

The following Seven Signs were manifested by God so that we might believe that Yeshua is the Messiah and that by believing we might have eternal life in his name.

Sign #1: The First Sign, where the Messiah turned water into wine (האות הראשון, איפה המשיח בו הפך מים ליין);
Sign #2: Healing of the Nobleman’s Son (ריפוי בנו של איש הממשל);
Sign #3: Healing man crippled for 38 years (ריפוי האיש שלא יכלו ללכת במשך 38 שנה);
Sign #4: Feeding of the 5,000 (המשיח מאכיל חמשת אלפים איש);
Sign #5: Walking on Water (הליכה על פני המים);
Sign #6: Healing of man blind from birth (ריפוי עיוור מלידה);
Sign #7: Messiah Yeshua raises Lazarus from the dead (המשיח ישוע מקים לתחייה את אלעזר).

These Seven Signs were manifested in particular settings as a means of connecting all of the institutions and festivals of Israel to their obvious messianic meanings. Also these 7 Signs are connected to the 7 ‘I Am’ Sayings, the 49 Meshalim (Parables), and the 49 Miracles of the Messiah (cf. following chapters).

Each of the 7 Signs uniquely facilitates faith in the one studying them sufficient to believe that Messiah is no ordinary man. He is the new Adam ben HaElohim. He is the first of many sons of glory, who like him (in the future) will miraculously be raised up as righteous ones on the day of our resurrection. God our Father shall soon raise up a new humanity out of the ashes of our old humanity through His redemptive ministry of His Messiah.

Fifth Sign and the Fifth Corporate Miracle:

The miracle of the boat instantly being transported over miles of sea to shore with Yeshua and his 12 tannaim, is the fifth of the 12 recorded corporate miracles God performed through Rabbi Yeshua. There are Twelve recorded corporate miracles of the Messiah (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12). The number Twelve is a symbol of God’s “governance” over the nation of Israel and its people and His rule over all creation.

The 5th Sign and 24th miracle point to the Seven “I Am” Statements:

The clause ‘It is I’ is literally “I am” (אני) “he” (הוא) possesses strong spiritual intent. In Greek it is phrased “I am” or “I exist,” ego eimi (ἐγώ εἰμι). This is a profound statement of absolute and continuous existence; as is testified to in the Besorah of  Yochanan (8:58) when Yeshua says:

“.ב לָהֶם יֵשׁוּעַ: “אָמֵן אָמֵן אֲנִי אוֹמֵר לָכֶם, בְּטֶרֶם הֱיוֹת אַבְרָהָם, אֲנִי הוּא

Yeshua said to them: “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, ‘I Am.'”

In this setting God is displaying His power over creation and by His Messiah’s perfect submission to Him he is directly speaking through His Messiah, His Son. This means:

The fullness of God (EL-Beit-El) dwells bodily in His Messiah.

Yeshua is the one and only perfect man (Beit-El). A man of a different kind. All of God’s deity dwells bodily in M’shico Yeshua because this second Adam ben HaElohim (Son of God) has never thought or behaved differently than God the Father has desired of him. The unity of the Father and the Son has never been broken. Yeshua has fulfilled all of the Torah of God. He is the Mystery of God who only does the will of God throughout all eternity. Therefore God the Father says of him:

“This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased. Hear, understand, and obey him!”

In the Tanakh the meaning of God’s name (YHWH) is closely related to “I Am.” God said to Moses, “I Am who I Am” (Eheye’ Asher Eheye’). Also He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel ‘I Am’ (Eheye’) has sent me to you.”

The Seven “I Am” Statements of the Messiah:

(1) “I Am the Bread of Life.” (אני הוא לחם החיים)
(2) “I Am the Light of the world.” (אני אור העולם)
(3) “I Am the Gate for the sheep.” (אני הוא שער הצאן)
(4) “I Am the Good Shepherd.” (אני הרועה הטוב)
(5) “I Am the Resurrection and the Life.” (אני התחיה והחיים)
(6) “I Am the Way and the Truth and the Life.” (אני הדרך והאמת והחיים)
(7) “I Am the true Vine.” (אני הגפן האמתית ואבי הכורם)

The 5th Sign and 25th miracle bear witness to God’s Rule over Space and Time:

Kefitzat HaDerech (קְפִיצַת הַדֶּרֶךְ) is a Hebrew concept referring to miraculous teleportation or the supernatural compression of space and time. In this case the traveling servant of God transcends normal laws of time and space. While the phrase translates literally as “the jumping of the road,” it is widely interpreted as the “shortening of the way.” This kind of miracle does not actually speed up the traveler. Instead, it is believed that God compresses or folds the earth beneath His traveling servants. In this type of miracle:

It is not the traveling time that is shortened but rather the distance itself.

God’s servants are suspended above the boundaries of time and space, so that they can instantaneously move from one place to another. The scriptures record several instances of miraculous, instantaneous transportation powered by the Holy Spirit. In today’s text we read: “Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and suddenly (פתע), immediately  (εὐθέως) the boat reached the shore where they were heading.”

The Moment Yeshua Entered the Boat!

Rather than rowing the remaining miles, the moment Yeshua entered the boat, he and his disciples were instantly warped or brought to their final destination of Messiah’s hometown of Kefar Nachum (כפר נחום); the Village of [God’s] Comfort, Consolation, and the giving of [His] Rest (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12). This 5th Sign and 11th Miracle of Kefar Nachum is unique from the other eleven miracles for it involves the Messiah instantaneously transporting his Twelve disciples and their boat from the middle of the Sea of Galilee to the shore of our Rabbi Yeshua’s home.

Power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you:

.אֲבָל בְּבוֹא עֲלֵיכֶם רוּחַ הַקֺּדֶשׁ תְּקַבְּלוּ כֺּחַ וְתִהְיוּ עֵדַי הֵן בִּירוּשָׁלַיִם וְהֵן בְּכָל יְהוּדָה וְשׁוֹמְרוֹן, עַד קְצֵה הָאָרֶץ

“But when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, you will receive power and be my witnesses—in Jerusalem, throughout all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)

Another instance of miraculous transportation is when Philip by the power of the Spirit of Adonai was instantly transported (snatched away) from a desert road to the city of Azotus. This was an instantaneous, supernatural relocation of 20 to 30 miles. Acts 8:38-40 reads:

הוּא צִוָּה לַעֲצֺר אֶת הַמֶּרְכָּבָה וּשְׁנֵיהֶם יָרְדוּ אֶל הַמַּיִם, הֵן פִילִיפּוֹס וְהֵן הַסָּרִיס, וּפִילִיפּוֹס הִטְבִּילוֹ. כְּשֶׁעָלוּ מִתּוֹךְ הַמַּיִם חָטְפָה רוּחַ הי אֶת פִילִיפּוֹס, וְהַסָּרִיס לֹא רָאָה אוֹתוֹ עוֹד. אָז נָסַע לְדַרְכּוֹ שָׂמֵחַ. וּפִילִיפּוֹס נִרְאָה בְּאַשְׁדּוֹד. הוּא עָבַר וּבִשֵּׂר בְּכָל הֶעָרִים עַד בּוֹאוֹ לְקֵיסַרְיָה.פּ

He ordered the chariot to stop, and both of them—Philip and the eunuch—went down into the water, and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of Adonai snatched Philip away, and the eunuch saw him no more. So he went on his way rejoicing. Philip appeared in Ashdod; he traveled through the region, preaching the gospel in all the towns until he reached Caesarea.

מַלְאַךְ ה’ דִּבֵּר אֶל פִילִיפּוֹס וְאָמַר: “קוּם וְלֵךְ דָּרוֹמָה בַּדֶּרֶךְ הַיּוֹרֶדֶת מִירוּשָׁלַיִם לְעַזָּה, בַּדֶּרֶךְ הַמִּדְבָּרִית”.פּ

An Angel of Adonai spoke to Philip and said: “Rise and go south along the road that leads down from Jerusalem to Gaza—the desert road.” (Acts 8:26)

Philip who was instructed in Samaria by an Angel of Adonai to “Go south to the road that descends from Jerusalem to Gaza.” On the wilderness road he met a high-ranking Ethiopian court official reading the Book of Isaiah. Philip explained how the scripture pointed to Yeshua, leading the official to place his faith in Messiah. As soon as he baptized the official he instantly was transported to Azotus (the ancient Philistine city of Ashdod), which was roughly 20 to 30 miles north of the desert area where the baptism took place.

[Following Philip being miraculously transported to Azotus he continued preaching along the coastline until settling in Caesarea Maritima, where he spent the remainder of his life. Also worth noting: Philip had four unmarried daughters who possessed the spiritual gift of prophecy.]

Postscript: “Rabbi, when did you get here (ahead of us) at Kefar Nachum?”

In the morning, while the Messiah and His disciples were in Kefar Nachum, the crowd of thousands of Yehudim who had been fed were still on the eastern shore of the Sea of Galilee. They saw the Messiah did not get into the boat which was there. But since he did not get into the boat, the crowd supposed that he had stayed in the area.

After some time in the morning had elapsed the crowd realized that the Messiah was no longer there. Some boats from the village of Tiberias had landed, so the people decided to use those fishing and merchant boats to seek the Messiah in the northern region of the Sea of Galilee.

When the people searching for Yeshua found him, they asked him, “Rabbi when did you get here?” This question introduces the Messiah’s next long discourse in Kefar Nachum (go back to Part 12 of the last miracle). However, Rabbeinu Yeshua never did explain how or when he crossed the lake, for at this time his walking on the water and the miraculous transporting of the boat was a private sign (miracle) for only his closest 12 talmidim to know.
